PROFONDO ARGENTO Review
By Col. Scott W. Perry

PROFONDO ARGENTO by Alan Jones is the most complete collection and celebration of the master filmmaker Dario Argento, the legendary Italian filmmaker. Jones combines a look at each of his films in chronological order in mixture with interviews of Argento himself and some of the significant people in Dario’s life that it is a must for horror and Argento fans to buy.

PROFONDO ARGENTO highlights Argento’s entire career, with in depth chapters on each of his films as director and producer, with chapters on DAWN OF THE DEAD, DEMONS, and ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. At the end of each chapter is Jones’ review of the film in tremendous detail. Jones has been a close confidant of Argento for decades, having been on set of most of his films, and his insight into Argento is what makes this book a must buy.

The book is supplemented by many great photographs, some never before seen, throughout Argento’s career, with rare movie posters, behind the scenes images, and publicity photos. The highlights are photos from Jones himself on the set of Argento’s films, showing the master at work. His recent fare, most notably THE CARD PLAYER and THE STENDHAL SYNDROME, are best utilized here, and provide some interesting moments.

In addition to Dario himself, there are many interviews throughout, each given its own chapter and biography. The most notable come from Argento’s daughters; the stunningly gorgeous Asia and older half-sister Fiore, providing insights on Dario the man. How Dario uses his family in films has often been the subject of controversy; especially in Asia’s graphic rape scene in THE STENDHAL SYNDROME and topless scene at 16 in TRAUMA, and Fiore’s imprisonment at the hands of a killer in THE CARD PLAYER, where her gagged face provided the film’s poster. Jessica Harper gives an insightful interview on SUSPIRIA and how she considers it her finest work, yet the chapter on OPERA shows just how much Dario was hated by the film’s star, Christina Marsilliach, for the torment she endured while making the film. The book leaves off as Dario was just starting work on THE MOTHER OF TEARS, which is now complete and due to be released in the U.S. in March.

The book also looks at Dario’s entry into television, with his overlooked DOORWAY TO DARKNESS, four short films aired on TV with introductions by Dario. There’s only two pages devoted to the book, wishing there were more, but it also profiles Argento’s DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK, his most recent directorial effort.

The book is gorgeous, with every glossy page striking and vibrant, offering a unique book. With images on each page displaying the content of the chapters, it makes for an enjoyable book to read. It is only 320 pages, and its coffee table size make you able to read different chapters at a time for a quick read, and it is worth it for all fans of Argento such as myself.

In all, PROFONDO ARGENTO is a perfect book to celebrate the career of Dario Argento, that is a must for Dario fans and for horror fans alike. Film students should get this for an insight in the career of one of the most influential horror auteurs of all time. The hardcover is a little expensive, but its soft cover version is virtually the same size for lower amount that is worth buying.
